Shankline Chine is believed to be one of the earliest tourist attractions on the Isle of Wight. Records of visits to the site go back to 1817.

As well as being a beautiful place to walk through the chine is also home to a piece of World War two history. A fuel pipeline for Operation Pluto (Pipeline under the Ocean) also ran through the Chine. Just under 60 metres of pipework have been preserved there.

PLUTO is believed to be one of the great secret successes of the war. It carried petrol 65 miles under the English Channel to Cherbourg.

As part of a general administration ticket to Shanklin Chine, you are allowed to visit as many times as you like for seven days. This allowed us to return after sunset. From April to the end of October, the Chine Lumière is when hundreds of lights illuminate the narrow paths, streams, and waterfall.
