Our Stay

We stayed at Southland Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite during the school summer holidays 2023 (End of July/start of August). Our stay was part of the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s sail and stay deal that gave use a reduced ferry crossing price on the Red Funnel service from Southampton to East Cowes.

All of the hardstanding pitches were ample size for our caravan, awning, and car to all sit on the gravel. Our pitch (and we assume the rest of the hardstanding) had a large level of gravel, which did make pegging the awning down a little challenging. To get the pegs to remain in the ground, we first needed to scrap away some of the gravel before hammering the rock pegs in.

Location

The Southland site is located just outside the village of Newchurch. Newchurch is in a central location on the Isle of Wight. Only a 10 minute drive to the town of Sandown, which has a variety of shops.

Directions

The below route guidance is based on information from the site/CAMC and our own experience.

  • From East Cowes Follow the A3021 out of the town past the entranceof Osborne Estate, in approximately miles at the roundabout turn left onto the A3054 (Ryde); in 1 mile at The Cedars Inn turn right at traffic lights; at first mini roundabout turn left (Robin Hill); at the traffic lights (Hare and Hounds public house) do not follow your sat nav; instead continue straight down the hill to Arreton. At the T-junction (on a bend) turn left onto the A3056 towards Sandown. After approx 3 miles turn left (second left past Fighting Cocks Public House).
  • From Fishbourne: continue to traffic lights and turn right (Newport); turn left at next traffic lights (Cedar Inn); then as above.
  • From Yarmouth: on A3054 leave Newport onto A3020, then A3056 (Sandown); in 5.5 miles turn second left past Fighting Cocks (signposted Newchurch).

The Site

Site entrance barriers and reception

This site is open from March to November each year. There are 145 pitches in total. As you enter the site, hard standing and service pitches are all located to the right with grass and tent pitches to the left. When we visited (July 2023), the CAMC was trialling a fast check-in system that used AMPR cameras to operate the sites security barriers. This reduces the need for new guests to enter the site reception building.

On-site facilities block

There is one facility block located in the centre of the site. This block is to the usual Caravan and Motorhome Club standard with around 7 toilet cubicles, showers, and wash basins. Some of these have been adapted with outward opening doors and adjustable shower heads. As with all other club sites, shower curtains have been removed. Unfortunately, not all of the curtain rails have been removed, which, as a taller guest, can be a hazard.

Set up on pitch 155

When we visited this site, the Caravan and Motorhome Club had upgraded the Wi-Fi system on site. This means that Wi-Fi is available to pitch, with both a free and paid for premium service available. The pitch we were based on (pitch 155) was located half way between two of the Wi-Fi antennas, we had a varied service and at times would drop off (depending on how many others were on the site). When our devices were connected to the free service, we found the speed to be good. Wifi antennas appear to have been installed at most of the service point areas, which should give a good signal range to most pitches.

The grounds had been kept to a high standard that we would expect from a CaMC site. The grass pitch area is set in small sections surrounded by high hedges. Hardstanding pitches are in a section to the right of the campsite. This did make it feel separate to the rest of the site.

In the area

The Isle of Wight has a whole host of attractions and other places of interest. During our visit, we visited Shanklin Chine, Godshill Model Village, Osborne House, and Carisbrooke Castle, to name but a few.

Just 10 minutes down the road (other side of Newchurch village) is the famous Isle of Wight Garlic Farm. They have a farm shop, open farm area, walks, and restaurant. We visited one morning and had a Garlic Farm breakfast, which we would highly recommend.
