The Llechwedd Mine is located just outside the North Welsh town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Slate mining has been happening in the area since the Industrial Revolution. At the peak of the industry 17,000 people where employed and by the end of the 19th century half a million tonnes of slate per year were being extracted.
Llechwedd Mine is now home to Zip World, a truly unique experience as you can now fly over the top of the site on one of the various high speed zip lines, play golf underground, bounce on trampolines in caverns and explore the vast cavern system by taking the deep mine tour.
We visited during our trip to North Wales in August 2023 and took part in two different experiences during the visit.
The Deep Mine Tour
The deep mine tour was a fantastic experience. Our guide was very informative about the history of the mine and the rest of the area.
At the end of the mine tour, you leave the mine via the ‘train’ that climbs up the steep incline.
Underground Golf
The underground golf was great, 18 slate mine related mini golf holes lit by neon lights and disco pop music.
